Chocolate and Cancer

Someone got us a box of See’s candy for Christmas. I am not sure who this gift is from. I am sure that there was a card that went with it at some point in time, but last night the card was destroyed when the gift was unwrapped. So I would like to say thank you to the giver of the See’s candy. It was a really nice gift to give. All that is left of this delicious gift is little brown wrappers strewn across our living room floor like rose petals. The chocolate was devoured by Hercules in the middle of the night.

Yes Hercules, our dog who was diagnosed with cancer in October. Hercules doesn’t realize that he has lost 15 pounds and shouldn’t have the energy to sniff out the good presents and eat them. He can now cross “Eat a pound of chocolate in one sitting” off his “things to do before he dies” list. I wonder what else is on that list.

All you dog lovers know that chocolate is bad for our four legged friends. It’s supposed to make them sick, it could kill them. Does Hercules know this? Is his midnight snack a suicide attempt, or did he overhear us talking about the health benefits of chocolate to cancer patients and decide to self medicate? Who knows… One thing is for certain, our dying dog has not changed one bit. His body is failing and he is still a trouble maker.

I love you sweet dog, even if you did eat my chocolate.

Aw, poor puppy! I have had See's Candy once in the past, it is definitely very very good. I always feel so bad for pets when they are sick, they are so much like children.

Awwww. Poor doggie.

Our dogs (all of them in my lifetime) have always love chocolate. Nothing bad ever happened to them either.

At our Christmas party, we received a great portable DVD player without a card. We have narrowed the list down to five possible suspects but don't know how to thank them for the gift. Crazy.

You cracked me up with the self-medicating line.

Poor pup. Sorry to hear that he is ill. Chocolate ALWAYS makes me feel better. Especially good chocolate.

Hugs to your pup.

A dog's gonna do, what a dog's gonna do. Poor thing. Last year, my mom made nativity scene out of white chocolate. She walked in as her dog was on the table and screamed "You ATE Jesus?!?!!" Like her dog knew the difference between Jesus and a wise man.

Oh, poor doggie. He's just trying to live it up a little, now that his time is short. Next thing you know, he'll be skydiving off your roof or something...

Oh, this was a sad, but funny little story about your poor dog eating your box of chocolates. I'm so sorry that he's so sick. Take care. Kellan

PB&J - you crack me up!

Latte Mommy - I would not be surprised if he did base jump from our roof. LOL

Kellan - It is sad that he is sick. We are amazed that he had held on for so long. Most of the time he acts like his normal self. He's a great dog that has had a great life. We appreciate every day that he remains with us.

Mmmm, See's is yummy. When I lived on the west coast, there was a See's in the mall. It seems on the east coast you can only find it at Christmas and only in prepackaged boxes :(.

I hope the chocolate doesn't make Hercules feel bad.

BTW, I found the dinosaur sandwich cutter at Safeway. It was hanging on a little thing next to the jelly or the peanut butter...I don't remember which.

Hi. I got to your blog from my sister Irene. Sorry to hear about your dog. At least he's living it up. I have a little girl who looks like the same age as your daughter's. She'll be 4 next month. I don't put pictures on my blog, but you kind of look like me!

dogs...what are you going to do? Ours eats pencils then hacks them up in the form of white mucasy junk. It's lovely.

Sorry to hear about your sick pup.

This made me laugh and brought tears to my eyes.
Way to go Hercules, getcha some buddy!
He was just trying to save y'all the calories. Y'know, being man's best friend and all.
