Christmastime is a great occasion to gather together with family. It is during these times that I get to hear the stories about Jeff’s childhood that he otherwise wouldn’t tell me. A couple of years ago I was shocked by this story:
Cousin 1: Do you remember the time we took those little white balls out of the bean bag and stuffed them in our ears?
Jeff’s sister: Yeah, and your parents were freaking out because they couldn’t get all the balls out of your ears.
Cousin 2: Jeff, wasn’t that your idea?
Jeff takes a big drink of beer to avoid conversation. He always gets uncomfortable when they start telling “Jeff” stories.
Jeff’s sister: Hey, do you guys remember the time Jeff stuck a marble up his nose?
Cousin 1: Oh, that was so funny!
Me: What? A MARBLE! How could he fit a marble up his nose?
Cousin 2: Oh, it was SO funny. His nose bulged out where the marble was.
Jeff has now gone to get another beer to avoid conversation.
Me: How did they get it out?
Jeff’s sister: They pushed on the top of his nose to force the marble out.
Me: Who, in their right mind, would put a marble in their nose?
So last night when my Christmas letter was interrupted by Ariel complaining about her nose, I spent a very short time trying to blow her nose before I got a flashlight and looked up her nose. As you know from last night’s post, she went to the doctor to have the object removed.
The doctor extracted this:
It is a bead that had come off her necklace. The removal was fast and easy. Doctors have tools for this sort of thing.
Ariel has inherited Jeff’s propensity to put objects up his nose. I hope she has learned her lesson, but just in case she hasn’t, I am removing all marbles and bean bags from my house.

I love hearing stories about things my boyfriend did as a kid. I'm mentally collecting all these stories to tell his kids what their daddy did when he was little, although I don't want to give them ideas for things to do when they are bored! It's funny your husband gets embarrassed by it. I'm usually really proud when my brothers recount the loony stuff I did as a fearless youngling!
Oh my.. I'm so fortunate that my boys never did shove stuff up their nose.
No, mine just get funky injuries. *sigh* I don't remember signing up for daredevils when I asked for kids. :)
I am relieved to hear the there are others who have children with funny injuries.
(hugs)
For some time, I thought it was only my children. Thank goodness for reading blogs. I feel party normal.
LOL! Oh my gosh!!
Isn't it scary what they inheirit!!
Marbles and little white balls, so he likes round things then?
Too funny!!
Thanks for the giggles :-)
I'm glad to hear it came out easily! Just when you think you've got your house child-proofed, they go and show you that you're never really one step ahead of them...
I've never had the marble up the nose but I am often fishing the nickles out of the mouth.
Hey, I selected you for an interesting tag about how we discipline our children. If your up for it (it's a linky nightmare)check it out, if not..I'll still love ya.
Oh, Thats too funny! I put crayons in each of my nostrils when I was a kid and had to go to the er. Lets hope my kids dont follow suite!! Hope she is feeling ok!
LOL! I am glad she is okay, but it's pretty darn funny:) When I was a preschool teacher the kiddos stuck all kinds of goodies in their noses!!
Wow! I'm glad everything "came out" okay! I haven't had to deal with objects in the nose, yet. I have vague memories of me putting a kernal of corn up my nose. And my dad holding me upside down by my feet, to get it out. It never did come out, but it sure was fun!
I honestly think MOST kids have this experience. My daughter, when I think she was about 4, came to me and said she has a Polly Pocket shoe up her nose. Luckily, we were able to reach it with some tweezers.
OH, and my sister stuck a pussy willow up her nose when she was little. That required a trip to the ER though.
Kids sometimes just don't make sense!
Oh, the poor girl! I have not had that yet but kids do all sorts of surprising things. Good to hear she is okay!
I had a "nose" incident yesterday!
I love hearing about the husbands childhood antics! Mine has "forgotten" so many....
